The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Well, here we go, the sequel to the ever so popular Super Mario Bros Movie. To nobody’s surprise, this film is most definitely geared directly to kids, and certainly not one that you should sit back and critique. Which is exactly what I’m about to do. What I mean is that you turn off your brain, you can have some fun and enjoy the characters. However, if you turn on your brain, then you’ll see that it’s a bit tricky to find a plot. I think technically it’s “we have to save Rosalina”, but along the way, they keep getting side tracked, and it made the 90 minutes a bit too long. I felt like a lot of itty bitty side quests all thrown together, and then eventually, they got to Rosalina and hallelujah. It just doesn’t feel very cohesive, but again, it’s made for kids and they’re easy to please. I did find it pretty enjoyable for the most part, and very funny. There were many moments that I was giggling and laughing and having a good time. In between those, it felt very long. I know I keep contradicting myself by saying it’s good and fun yet bad and boring. To sum it up, it’s stupidly fun. I liked it and some people judge it too harshly. The performances are good but not great (though shoutout Glen Powell, freaking love that guy), and the character designs are all fantastic. Everything was bright and vibrant and vivid, which is what builds the fantastical atmosphere. The score is awesome, doing an orchestral version of the video game music, though the soundtrack is a step down from the first film. Overall, it’s a fun film if you try to have fun, but don’t go in expecting something amazing. It’s a good time for the family. I would recommend it to most animation fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
