Blue Moon
Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke certainly know the way to my heart (and probably always will). I’m not really sure why I resonated with this film so much. I just did. Ethan Hawke is already one of my favorite actors ever, so as I listened to him ramble about stories on life and music, I soaked up every single word. His character, Lorenz Hart, reminds me of a couple people I’ve met in my life that just don’t stop talking, but they always have something interesting to say. I really appreciated that for this kind of film, and something that Linklater certainly excels at in his work. I mean, all you have to do is watch his Before trilogy, which is completely driven by dialogue. So is this. Visually, not a whole lot happens. Probably 95% of this takes place in a bar, so you see the same sight nearly the whole time. But it doesn’t matter or become boring. You’re too listening to what everyone has to say. If anything, the one location makes it even more comfortable. The atmosphere of this film is one of my favorites I’ve ever seen, in the history of film. I’ve never felt so relaxed and settled into one environment. The music, the cigar smoke, the drinks on the bar, the suits, everything about it was just so…..cozy. The writing was some of the best of the year, with so many natural conversations that don’t seem like something from over 80 years ago. The way everything just flowed together really kept the authenticity of the time, and the chemistry between everyone. The performances were all wonderful and spot on, especially from Ethan Hawke and Bobby Cannavale. Those two really shined for me, Ethan especially. I need to see him with an Oscar nomination asap. It’s one of my favorite performances of the year, if not my favorite. My last note is that the score was outstanding and is the main driver of the film, besides the dialogue. It helped control the mood and was so slow and beautiful, and blended perfectly into the setting. You just had to be there. At the theater, that is. Overall, this is easily one of my favorites of the year, and so easy to settle into. My advice is just to listen. Enjoy it. Let it sink in. It won’t work if you don’t. I would recommend this to all drama/history fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
