This has been on my list to watch for so long now, and now that the third one comes out in a week, I’ve finally gotten around to watching this. All I have to say is that I believe the hype around these. Both cinematically and box office, it’s truly one of the greatest achievements in cinema that I’ve ever seen. Especially considering the fact that this was made sixteen years ago (as of this writing), and looks better than most films made today. Absolutely astonishing. My only two critiques are the story and characters. Story-wise, it felt a little bland, because it was just the classic “government/corporation is too powerful and must be stopped” kinda thing. I was very invested, but it doesn’t stick out as being anything too unique. On the flipside, the world building with the Na’vi is amazing, and creates an entirely new world and people. The other critique is the human characters, who are all pretty shallow and don’t have much personality. They’re just your average protagonists and antagonists who exist in every other action film. Everything else about this is wonderful. Visually, it’s vivid, sharp, colorful, and relaxed, but also, when it needs to be, dark and gloomy and realistic. The contrast between Pandora and anything with a human touch is great. The CGI looks slightly dated, but still incredible and very Zack Snyder-esque. The designs of the animals and Na’vi are what make this truly memorable. Lastly, the score is extremely strong and really boosts the mood of every scene where it’s present. It’s booming and heroic, but at times, subtle and heartfelt. Overall, it’s awesome what this film could achieve in its time, and the legacy and cinematic impact it’s made. I would recommend it to all fantasy/action fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
