The Fountain
The duo of Aronofsky and Jackman wasn’t a duo I knew I needed. But I loved the two of them together, and it’s too bad they haven’t done more than just this one film. Speaking of the film, it’s definitely one I’ll need to revisit in the future. I did enjoy it, but not as much as I was hoping I would. It took me quite a few minutes to truly get into it, I think because of the way the story jumps around and connects between the three different times. Conceptually, it’s awesome that way, it just took some time for me to really settle in. But it certainly has the Aronofsky touch to it. The combination of science fiction, romance, historical drama, action, all of the above. This film has everything. The third act is specifically cool, and comes to a satisfying and meaningful conclusion. The writing is solid all around, though again, it might take a rewatch or two to really get a grasp on everything. Not that it’s confusing. I wasn’t confused. I think the pacing just threw me off, but that’s the way it should feel. The whole thing is very subjective. Having three different time periods with the same actors but different(?) characters was genius, especially since all the time periods correlate with each other. The parallels are great, and the message of the film explores humanity and feelings. The performances were all good, with Jackman stealing the show. He communicates with his eyes fantastically. I love when he’s bald, too. While a serious film, it’s still just humorous enough to keep you feeling good. Lastly, the visual effects mixed with the sets and props help solidify an authentic environment, atmosphere, and feeling. Overall, this is a good film, though I think I’m ranking it too low. I’ll come back and check on it later, and probably have a greater appreciation for it. I’d recommend it to most sci-fi/romance fans.
