Requiem for a Dream
I’m depressed now. This was a trip and a half, and legitimately one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s a new type of sadness that I don’t know that I’ve felt before. An undiscovered sadness. I don’t think any other film has ever made me feel that way. I’ve seen sad films, and this one just….man. I’m usually not a huge fan of films that have a big display of drugs, like ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ or something along those lines. However, this one stands, simply because of how trippy it is, while still being down to earth. The events that take place are things that actually happen to real life people, and most of us are too spoiled to notice. Aronofsky is able to replicate a sensation of how one could be reacting to the effects and withdrawals of substances. I’ve never been on anything, so I couldn't tell you what it feels like, but this film made me feel so overwhelmed and mentally unstable, and not in a joking or comedic way. It takes itself seriously. The editing is among the best you’ll ever see in any film, maybe of all time. That might be bold to say, but I don’t care. The many cuts keep the pace very quick, and help build a certain vibe that matches the character’s stories. The little snippets of substances and bodily reactions really, really help define the whole tone. It’s both beautiful and very….haunting. The cast was extremely solid and felt very authentic, especially from Ellen Burstyn. I’m sure Julia Roberts was great in ‘Erin Brockovich’, but Burstyn should’ve taken that Oscar home. One of the more heartbreaking performances I’ve seen in recent memory. The downwards spiral, not just from her, but each character, was truly memorable, and not in a happy way. The score also adds a huge impact to the film, with a string section that hits you straight in the gut. It’s very simple, but very impacting and powerful. Well done, Clint Mansell. Overall, this is one of the most heartbreaking and eye opening films I’ve ever seen, and should be experienced by everyone. You will leave differently.
