The Naked Gun
Comedy is so back. In the last five years, there’s been so many Netflix originals and random comedies that have been complete trash, and are nowhere near funny at all. However, when this was first announced, I had a glimmer of hope that this could be good. Combining the idea of a soft reboot of one of the funniest films of all time, and putting Liam Neeson front and center, I was behind it from day one. Slightly skeptical, but still supportive. And the reviews were correct in saying that this is one of the funniest films of this decade, because it absolutely is. The old school humor returns, and the use of props, physical humor, and dry line deliveries makes this so special, and so reminiscent of the Nielsen era. There’s enough throwbacks to induce nostalgia and fuzzy feelings, while still being completely fresh. I also love how while still being original, it also does some great spoofing. I mean, the Mission: Impossible hospital scene? Absolutely fantastic. The whole cast does great, specifically, and very obviously, Liam Neeson. Get him into more comedies. He channels his inner Frank Drebin (Jr) in the best way ever. Pamela Anderson was great too, especially her club performance. And it’s always awesome to see Kevin Durand in anything. Overall, this is a film that completely respects the original films and series, while still being refreshingly funny, and just an all around delight. Not as good as the original, but pretty close. I don’t remember the last time I laughed this much in a theater. Especially the kitchen scene. My goodness. I would recommend this to all comedy fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go support an actually great, modern comedy and see it now!
