Thunderbolts*
I had no idea Marvel could’ve pulled off something like this. Well, let me rephrase that. I had no idea the MCU could’ve pulled off something like this. The only Marvel films of any kind that have had this much of a mental and emotional punch would be the Guardians trilogy, Infinity War, Logan, and Spider-Man 2. This one probably does the best possible job of demonstrating mental health and depression in an effective manner. It’s not done insensitively, or just because it can. The film uses the characters and their past to give everyone a redemption arc, all while teaming up to battle loneliness. There were so many scenes that were fun and entertaining, and then some that absolutely punched you in the gut. The entire third act was absolutely phenomenal, and that’s where it hit the hardest. The first two acts were a fantastic buildup, and then WHAM. Just amazing. And the way the film physically shows the aspects of mental health, not just using dialogue from the characters. You experience the hardships alongside everyone, not just hear them talk about it. Like I said, it does the best possible job of using dark topics to bring the message. The performances helped elevate the message hugely. Florence Pugh is the greatest thing to happen to the MCU, solely because she can deliver so much weight and depth in anything she says. She’s so relatable to the common audience member. Lewis Pullman was also fantastic, with a great split personality performance. When he’s Bob, he’s so innocent and vulnerable. You just want to hug him so hard. When he’s Sentry, he’s menacing and freaking awesome. When he’s The Void, he’s absolutely terrifying and causes immense fear. Wrapping up, the action scenes were very sweet, the cinematography was bleak but detailed, and the character/suit designs were wonderful. Overall, it’s a grounded film that feels depressing and almost dystopian, yet there’s so much heart and fun. It’s certainly one of the best MCU films of all time. I don’t think that’s arguable. I’d recommend it to all superhero fans, and this should be experienced by everyone. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
