Adolescence
I waited much too long to see this, considering the luck it’s had this past awards season, especially at the Emmy’s. There’s only four episodes, each one about an hour longer, so it’s not too long to watch. The easy highlight for me about this show is how each episode is one continuous take. Each episode obviously had a bunch of takes, but it’s almost mindblowing how everything happens in real time, with no cuts or transitions. It feels about as close to real life as you can get. The story is spaced out over several months, so you can see how everyone reacts and handles the situation. It’s wonderfully written all around, from the characters to the dialogue to the actions by the cast. The teleplay is very strong, one of the best in any show I’ve seen. There’s a reason it won the Emmy for Best Limited/Anthology Series. The performances are all stellar and will be talked about for years to come. Stephen Graham (who got the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited/Anthology Series) delivers one of the most emotional performances I’ve seen in a TV show in the fourth episode. I still would’ve liked to see Colin Farrell win that Emmy for ‘The Penguin’, but Graham does deserve it. However, he’s not the one that everyone’s been talking about. Owen Cooper, who plays Jamie, won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited/Anthology Series, and the youngest person to ever win an Emmy at 15. That’s seriously awesome, and I couldn’t be happier for him. It’s so cool to see how anyone can do anything at any age, and you don’t need experience to be the best. Just do what you love doing. Take chances. Put yourself out there. Overall, this show was amazing and impressed me a lot. It’s original, it’s relevant, and it’s emotional. It takes real world problems and presents it in an educational yet entertaining way. I would recommend it to all crime/drama fans. This show is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
