The Monkey
I gotta say, I am a bit disappointed in this and Oz Perkins. Oz, nothing against you at all. It’s just very sad having to go from ‘Longlegs’, which I believe is an underrated masterpiece, to this very goofy and very messy film. I think the best way to describe it is that when it’s good, it’s really good, but when it’s bad, it’s really bad. For the most part, it lacks any kind of heart or personality. Conceptually, everything should be there, but it just wasn’t written the way it should’ve been. I’d like to read the short story this is based on, to see how much has changed. But just based on the film alone, it’s really not much worth seeing. I think it jumps way too much between scenes, and just doesn’t feel like it’s anything special. The writing for the twins wasn’t great, and felt super stupid and almost pointless. However, any scene with the monkey was pretty sweet. It feels a lot like ‘Final Destination’ in terms of crazy, unexpected deaths, and supernatural elements that determine fate. In that sense, the film was very good in places. The gore is fun (especially Uncle Chip, who had my favorite death), and the shock value is pretty good. The cheerleaders at the end……that’s my favorite example. The acting was very mediocre at best, and all of the characters were pretty unbearable. But it was very fun to see Adam Scott and Elijah Wood for a few minutes. That’s about all I can think of saying right now. For the most part, it's sluggish and boring, but there are definitely some fun moments that are totally awesome. Unfortunately, it’s just not consistent. Still, I’d probably recommend it if you love crappy horror films.
