The Usual Suspects
CHRISTOPHER MCQUARRIE, THAT OSCAR IS YOURS. THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE A FILM. I’m going to break from my previous review history and definitely use some spoilers in just a few sentences. I have too much on my mind. First off, this is one of the best written films I’ve ever seen, and it’s only really because of the last couple minutes. Of course, the whole film is written well, but it’s almost a big jumble until the last few scenes, and then WHAM, you’re hit with one of the best twists of all time. Spoiler time! It’s revealed that most of what Verbal has explained is all fabricated, and being made up using words from the police bulletin board. I was left completely mind shattered, trying to make sense of what actually happened and what didn’t. We know for sure that the boat was on fire, and twenty-seven people died. But what exactly happened on that boat? What happened to the people? I guess we’ll never know. Absolutely wonderful character and story writing. I’m so glad McQuarrie got the Oscar for Best Screenplay. Cast wise, everyone did a fantastic job, with Kevin Spacey also taking home an Oscar (for Best Supporting Actor). I enjoyed him immensely, as I did for Byrne, del Toro, and Baldwin. Everyone embodies their characters wonderfully. The score was also intense and awesome, and it has such a classic crime thriller sound, which is exactly what the film is and needs. I want to end with a quote by David Lynch: “I don't know why people expect art to make sense. They accept the fact that life doesn't make sense.” That quote perfectly encapsulates this film. What’s real? What happened? Why did Verbal lie? What is he protecting? What is his motive? Those are questions we can always guess the answer to, but ultimately, all we can do is guess. But what I can tell you for certain is that this is masterfully written and masterfully directed, and I would recommend it to everyone. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
