Die My Love
I’ll be honest, really the only thing drawing me into this was Robert Pattinson and the fact that Scorsese helped produce it. I had seen the trailer at some point, but I still didn’t really know anything going into it. That was both a good and bad thing. On the good side, everything felt very intriguing and subjective on a first watch. On the bad side, it didn’t always feel new or original. It reminded me of other past psychological dramas I’ve seen, while still having its own themes and characters that stand out. A lot that stands out is the deep dive into Grace’s mind, and how she perceives the world. There’s a lot that deals with motherhood, postnatal depression, and how one can cope with life. I didn’t always relate to the film or her, probably because I’ve never gone through what Grace went through. But it’s still a good look into a woman’s psyche. The writing felt all over the place in terms of plot progression, mostly because there were several weird jumps and some side-by-side scenes that felt a little awkward. However, it’s still one coherent story, both physically and mentally. There’s certainly a lot to take in. The performances were all very strong, with the two lead performances being absolutely captivating. Robert Pattinson is great, though it’s not really anything we haven’t seen before. Jennifer Lawrence is the clear standout, and one of her best roles she’s ever done. She’s emotional and shows a lot of her soul, and physically, uses her body to send a message and create a mood. She’s both maniacal and very laid back, and has a perfect mix of crazy and calm. Sissy Spacek is also a gem in her supporting role. All the needle drops were great, the aspect ratio is a chef’s kiss, and it’s just a good looking film (though the night scenes were a little hard to see, even in the dark theater). However, the reason my enjoyment is only in the 70’s is because of how long it felt, and how some of it was bland and drawn out. It’s still good, though not as good as I thought it would be. Some of it is a run-of-the-mill thriller, but then a lot of it is kooky and screwed up and works well. I think this film will be very hit or miss for most. I would recommend it to most psychological drama/thriller fans.
