Train Dreams
Wow. I don’t exactly know what to say right now. For starters, it’s one of the most impactful films of 2025, and it really sits with you both during and after. I think it’s a topic that most people can relate to, and it felt extremely personal to me. No, I didn’t live life during the early 1900’s, nor have I had to build a cabin, or raise a kid, or proceed in life without technology. But you don’t need to identify with any of that to understand and comprehend the emotion that is displayed on the screen. The screenplay is phenomenal, with dialogue that seems seldom but is very powerful. Every conversation holds so much weight, even the most simplest sentences. Everything was so natural and authentic for the time. The line deliveries from Joel Edgerton were just so completely there, and the depth that he puts on each word is Oscar worthy. His entire performance is. Even though a lot of his screentime is just him reacting to the environment and the people around him, his presence commands the screen and his eyes penetrate you with both positive and negative feelings. Especially considering the story (which is brilliantly put on screen, but I won’t say why because of spoilers). He is just……it. I really hope he gets the recognition he deserves, because it’s one of the best performances of 2025. Also, major shoutout to William H. Macy, who makes the most of his screentime in a fantastic way. The score is beautiful and elegant, and the sound design really helps build the world that you see. But the highlight of the film is that it might be the most gorgeous looking, well shot film of 2025. I don’t say that lightly, because in a year of gorgeous films, this one stands out the most. It’s down to earth and flows smoothly, as well as showing every detail in the surroundings, and focusing on the smaller details, as well as the characters. The camera movements are subtle but accentuate every movement of every person and animal. The colors are just vibrant enough to give you a comfortable, surreal feeling, but it’s not overdone to where it exaggerates the atmosphere. Maybe none of that makes sense, but if you watch this, then you’ll fully understand what I mean. Every shot is breathtaking and could be put right on the wall. I mean, at this point, just give it the Oscar for Best Cinematography. Overall, this is one of the best films of 2025, and will stick with me for quite some time. It can be enjoyed by everyone (but you may need some tissues). This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
