Lanterns (Season 1)
Man, oh man. I love DC, I love Green Lantern, I love James Gunn, and I love superheroes! I’m also a very easy superhero fan to please, and while I am passionate about comic accuracy, I also love seeing an adaptation of something that may go against the grain. This season in particular seems to be universally loved (for the most part), and having just watched the season finale, I am very satisfied, though some people aren’t. Just remember….adaptation! Not everything needs to be exactly as once written, because what’s the fun in that? But yeah, I’m absolutely in love with this show and these characters. Bringing in John Stewart as the main DCU Lantern was a fantastic move, and I’ve never been more excited to see the future of a DC character. Hal Jordan is the Green Lantern I grew up seeing the most of, but Aaron Pierre’s take on this character might just be MY Green Lantern. Both him and Kyle Chandler’s performances are Emmy worthy and some of the most definitive versions of these characters. To me, anyway. Their chemistry is hilarious and stubborn, in a buddy cop way, though much more “cop” than “buddy”. Whoever cast them together needs a raise. Kelly Macdonald also did some SERIOUS heavy lifting when it came to the acting (get her an Emmy, too). The plot throughout these eight episodes was very well written, with a use of non-linear storytelling that jumped around just enough, but not too much. I was completely invested from the first second to the very last, and the down-to-earth grittiness is exactly why this show works. Don’t expect a big green CGI battle against aliens. Look for a great detective series that brings a sense of urgency, tension, and pain. A wonderful cast, great score, bleak (but good) visuals, and amazing writing makes this one of the best seasons of DC TV that we’ve gotten. I am very impatient for ‘Man of Tomorrow’, as well as a future season two, and all I’m saying is that Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan are my Green Lanterns. I would recommend this to all superhero fans. This season is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
