Boy Erased
As someone who comes from a Christian upbringing, and maybe doesn’t always agree with traditional teachings, this film was hard to stomach. I’m gonna try very hard not to let opinions get in the way of the review. There’s a time and place for me to express views, and that’s not here. The story is all about someone going through conversion therapy, the inner workings of it, and how that can be detrimental. It’s an interesting perspective, but not one unfamiliar. Traditional Christian parents with a gay son, we’ve seen and heard of it before, and it still feels just as tragic as it has in other media. This is also based on a memoir, which I haven’t read, but I have a great interest in checking it out. Whether you’re gay or not, this film has teachings of identity and staying true to yourself. The performances, specifically from Lucas Hedges, were all fantastic and really drove home the point. Russell Crowe and Joel Edgerton did a little too good of an acting job as the Christian supporting roles. Nicole Kidman’s wig also stood out. Maybe not positively, but it stood out. But Lucas Hedges really shines, and I want to watch ‘Lady Bird’ now, because apparently his characters are similar. There’s just so much sympathy you have for him. Overall, this film is powerful, and though it’s not over-the-top amazing, it still holds a good message than anyone can learn from. I would recommend it to all drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
