My Own Private Idaho
I’ve been wanting to watch this for so long, and I’ve had it on Criterion for a couple months, and I finally got around to watching it. The biggest pull for me was both Phoenix and Reeves, who I love, and also because it’s referred to as a cornerstone in queer cinema. It’s definitely not what I expected it to be, yet it exactly fits the bill. For starters, it has its Lynchian moments and themes, whether that was the intention or not. It’s also a bit Shakespearean, which is evident at times, but can also be subtle. Either way, both of those elements make this film stand out in a very unique way. I can understand why it’s revered and serves as a milestone in queer cinema. It’s very open about its messaging and themes, but does it in a way that keeps it crucial to the characters without using it as a shtick or throwaway gag. I mean, I think the entire film would be somewhat meaningless without the campfire scene (if you know, you know). But yeah, it hits pretty hard at times, with a small focus on sensuality (which isn’t overdone), and the character relationships and personal struggles. As you can tell, it was very well written. Now, despite all that, I don’t think I found it as compelling as I was hoping to. While there were times I was completely infatuated by what was happening, there were also a couple moments where it just felt like your average film. I think there was a *small* sensory overload, just because this was more elevated and surreal than what I was ready for. I know on a second watch, I think I can settle into it much more quickly, and find it easier to absorb. I enjoyed the performances very much, with Phoenix and Reeves being the obvious standouts. I don’t think Keanu is always the best actor, but he’s very relatable in this, as is Phoenix. Watching the two of them bounce off each other and display their genuine connection was very comforting. Lastly, the visuals were great, with the use of landscapes and natural environment really benefiting the ambience and characters. Overall, it’s quite a solid film, though it falls just short of being truly excellent. But again, on a rewatch, I think I will like this much more. I would recommend it to all drama fans.
