Martyrs (2008)
Recently, I’ve been somewhat on a quest of trying to find the most disturbing film I’ve seen, and….yeah, you can put this in the top ten. I definitely wasn’t scared, but I was pretty uncomfortable, especially in the third act. The first half of the film wasn’t even that bad. Of course, I’ve been extremely desensitized, so it wasn’t too horrible for me. However, the moment Mademoiselle shows up, that's when the tide turns, and you find yourself sitting in a wonderfully disgusting creation of evil. I’m not even sure what that means, but it sounds cool. The whole concept of the story is great, though it’s nothing spectacular. I love how you can feel the evil behind it. There’s just a presence around the whole thing that makes you feel so uneasy, a lot like ‘Skinamarink’ or ‘Sinister’. I won’t say what the story’s about, but trust me, whatever you think it’s about, it’s not. The film synopsis on Google and Letterboxd is basically only the first act. There’s so much more that isn’t talked about, and by the end, it’s very disgusting, yet intriguing. Maybe I’m sick in the head for enjoying this, I don’t know. Either way, it’s incredibly disturbing, but I’m here for it. The performances were pretty good, mostly from Morjana Alaoui and Mylène Jampanoï. Those two carried this thing. Lastly, the makeup was very good and looked very authentic, which only helped make this film even more vile and distressing. And again, I’m here for it. Overall, it’s very solid, it’s very one-of-a-kind, and yes, very disturbing. I’d only recommend this if you have a strong stomach for these kinds of horror flicks. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
