28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
Man, I love this universe and I love this franchise. I usually think past ‘28 Weeks Later’, but each film just builds on the last, and I enjoyed this one even more than the previous one. Rather than having to settle into the environment and learn the characters, you get thrown right into it and it’s a blast until the end. You don’t have to navigate through anything too strenuous, you can just sit back and enjoy the atrocities of the Jimmy’s. Seriously, that barn scene? Totally awesome! Disturbing, yet awesome. But anyways, while the film leads into a potential third one, it still feels very complete and (slightly) tonally different than the previous. It’s still dark, twisted, and gross, but I love how it leans into the comedic aspect and how it makes everyone down to earth and almost realistic. The writing behind the characters was very well executed and makes this stand out among other zombie films. There’s times where I nearly physically winced from the gore, but also times where I was laughing out loud because of Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, or Dr. Kelson and Sampson’s fun times. The story picks up immediately after the previous film, and focuses on both Kelson and Spike’s escapade with the Jimmy’s. It does a good back and forth until everyone meets at the end. Well, not the very end. There’s that last scene, which made me insanely excited for a third film…..if you know, you know. The pacing was strong, with not too much dialogue, but enough to build the characters while still providing plenty of action and gore. Plus, beginning to rehumanize Sampson was such a good idea, and oddly, it makes a mindless zombie extremely interesting. Lastly, the performances were all (once again) very strong, and the trio of Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, and Alfie Williams completes this film. Overall, it’s exciting, hilarious, disgusting, and just fun. Here’s to a third one getting greenlit, cause I need it NOW. I would recommend this to all zombie/horror fans, just make sure to be caught up in the franchise. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
