tick, tick… BOOM!
As much as I love musicals, I’ve been putting this one off for way too long. This film is definitely directed more towards a Broadway sense, and though I’m not as big into musical theater as I am with film musicals, I thoroughly enjoyed this, as it’s a great combination of both. It doesn’t feel too outlandish as a lot of musicals do. Sometimes, they feel forced, extremely unnatural, and downright goofy. But, this film doesn’t do that at all. It does have a couple scenes where everyone gets up and sings, and that’s to be expected. But the overall tone is very realistic, with an authentic story that helps drive home the meaning. It’s about Jonathan Larson, a talented but hidden writer, who wants to make something for himself before he turns thirty. The film follows his passion, his friends, and looks into themes of society and homophobia. It doesn’t hit you over the head with anything, but delivers it just enough to give you something to think about, while still enjoying the characters and music. The cast was fantastic, especially Andrew Garfield. He definitely deserved his Oscar nomination, which he easily, EASILY should’ve won. His voice was angelic, and he communicated his emotions so well with his mannerisms and facial expressions. By the end of the film, you feel like you know him completely. The soundtrack was absolutely next level phenomenal, and one of the best soundtracks I think I’ve ever heard in my life. Every single song was memorable, relatable, beautiful, and full of meaning and love. And most of the music was indeed done by Jonathan Larson, so it only makes the film that more special. Overall, this film is truly gorgeous, despite some dark themes and moments, but you are left with such a great feeling of love. I would recommend it to all drama/musical fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
