Tár
Although I believe this movie is slightly overrated, it was still a pretty good movie. However, I found it incredibly boring, even though it had an interesting story and provided a fantastic character study. I did really like and appreciate the writing of the story. The biggest thing that sticks out to you from the movie is definitely the character of Lydia Tár. There were so many different things to watch for with her character, especially physically, emotionally, and mentally. I would say this is one of the best movies I’ve seen when it comes to looking at a specific person, and how they struggle with their own inner battles. I also really liked how Lydia is such a prominent female composer. It’s a nice spin on the story, and the presence of music in the movie helps boost it greatly. I really loved all the scenes where the orchestra was rehearsing, and as someone who has had band experience, it felt very real and authentic. And the music was just absolutely phenomenal. It really helps add so much feeling to the story, as well as Lydia’s character. I loved all the different arrangements so much. All the characters were pretty good, especially, and obviously, Cate Blanchett as Lydia. She did a freaking awesome job, and it’s one of my favorite female performances of this decade so far. She portrays her emotions so well, and even when she’s stone faced, you can still see what she’s feeling through her eyes. But, after all the good stuff I just said, this movie bored the heck out of me, and I found it really hard to sit through. In fact, there were some scenes where I got so bored that I read the entirety of Ryan Gosling’s Wikipedia page. You have to have a really great attention span to fully sit through this movie, as the 2 hour 37 minute run time definitely doesn’t help. If you don’t like watching character development, then this is not for you. Overall, it was good, just so slow and drawn out. It’s not one I’d watch again, but I’m glad I’ve now seen it.
