The Miseducation of Cameron Post
Alright, I’m gonna start off with a quick rant that is completely related to this film. With as much disrespect as possible, if you support conversion therapy, and think it’s smart to send your kids there, then you can go screw yourself and have a horrible life. You may think that’s quite a harsh thing to say, but it’s not. If you submit your own child to emotional and psychological abuse and torture, then you are not a loving parent. It’s that simple. Anyways, I just wanted to make that clear. In terms of the film itself, it seems along the same lines as ‘Boy Erased’, only from a female perspective and obviously with different characters and situations. Seeing as they both came out in 2018, I wouldn’t put one over the other. But they’re similar in tone and messaging, and I love both. The story is about a girl who is sent to conversion therapy, and how she copes with the whole ordeal, and how she interacts with the people around her to keep her stability. I have thankfully never been to conversion therapy, but coming from a gay person, this story was deeply relatable, especially because of the religious aspects. I think it’s pretty well written, and uses a short amount of time to tell a big story and pack a big punch. The authenticity feels there. The performances are all pretty good, with Chloë Grace Moretz turning in a fantastic and vulnerable performance that captures a lot of natural emotions. The supporting roles were all good too, but she was so raw and powerful. Even when she doesn't have much to say or react to, you can still pick up on her feelings. Everything else (such as visuals and score) were all good but nothing stellar. The two big things that capture you is Moretz’s performance and the messaging of how harmful it is to convince someone that they are subhuman and need to be fixed. Because that’s exactly what conversion therapy does. Overall, this is a great film, though it can be hard to sit through, obviously because of what I’ve mentioned. Trigger warning for anyone who is queer that decides to watch this. But it was worth it to me. I would honestly recommend it to everyone to see, especially if you’re a stubborn headed jackass who supports conversion therapy. Anyways, this film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
