Hamnet
Let’s start off by saying that I’ve never been a fan of Shakespeare, and frankly, I find all of his work extremely boring. Not saying that it’s not good work, I just can’t get behind it. On that note, I think this is my favorite version of anything Shakespeare related, because it tells a story straight from the ground, rather than anything elevated or super theatrical. Again, not discrediting his writing at all, but being able to physically see his life and family rather than his writings helps me understand him a whole lot better. That being said, this is not a film directly about Shakespeare, but more his wife, his relationships with her, and how they must combat life's challenges. It might be my favorite portrayal of Shakespeare, too (except for maybe that one Doctor Who episode with the witches). The screenplay really brings you straight into the family’s heart and soul, walking alongside them in each decision and emotion they feel. The characters are pretty well fleshed out, though I would’ve liked to have had a few more minutes getting familiar with their children. The pacing and entire structure of the story was phenomenal, with each act building off of the first, until the final scene which totally blows you away in every sense. Emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. The performances from pretty much every single cast member are all award worthy, but specifically Jessie Buckley (come get your Oscar, girl), Paul Mescal, and the Jupe brothers. Each one of them packs a huge punch, and if even one of them wasn’t in this, I honestly think the film had the potential to fall through. Max Richter’s beautiful score really pulls at your heart, on top of every other emotional moment you already have to endure. The visuals are old fashioned and sometimes gritty, but also very breathtaking and authentic. Chloé Zhao was absolutely the right person to direct this, and hats off to the entire team. Overall, it’s a staggering film with emotional performances, great costumes and sets, and themes that hit home, and while they tear you down, they can also lift you up. I would recommend this to everyone. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
