It Was Just an Accident
There're so many great revenge films out there, such as ‘John Wick’ and ‘Kill Bill’, but I think this sticks out above those simply because of how grounded it is, and it throws people into a situation they didn’t think they’d be in. I mean, that’s the case for the ones I just mentioned, but this one in particular because of how realistic it is. It’s not guns ablazing, but simply, what would you do if you found your torturer? The story dives into the mindset of coping and adapting to life after traumatic events, and suddenly, you have full control over the life of the person who hurt you. That’s all I’ll say and not get too specific into the plot. It’s nice to go in blind and not familiarize yourself with the events of the film. Trust me. That being said, it’s also a very comical film, which I wasn’t expecting. I would definitely categorize this as a dark comedy. Some scenes, especially the entire third act, are very serious and deep, but then other scenes I was laughing out loud, as was the rest of the theater. The reason why it’s so funny at times is because, again, it’s very realistic and grounded. The characters feel so genuine and authentic, and very relatable. So you just understand their mentality and decisions immediately. The performances were all fantastic, and each character has their own personality and vibe that meshes well with everyone else. Well done on the casting. The visuals were nice, though nothing too overdone. It looks grounded enough to feel like these events are happening right next to you, but it’s also just elevated enough to be gorgeous and tragic at the same time. The score was good, the writing was phenomenal, the dialogue was natural, and everything just clicked. This is easily one of the best films of the year, and will hopefully take home the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. I would definitely recommend this to all comedy/thriller fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
