Ari Aster, I love you. So much. You don’t even understand. Despite only having four feature films, he’s one of my favorite directors ever, and this film specifically is very clearly an Aster film. I love how this was marketed as a “modern western” which is exactly what it was. As a big fan of westerns, it was truly unique seeing one take place only five years ago, during civil unrest and social media dominance. Despite everything taking place during COVID and using real life events, it still feels like this takes place in another reality. It’s almost surreal, while still being completely grounded. Despite Aster’s previous three films, all of which are very, VERY out of this world, this has a gritty, down to earth atmosphere. You’re still elevated, but it’s entirely realistic. Ari Aster meets the Coen Brothers, that’s how this feels. The story deals with themes of society, paranoia, politics, and as stated before, civil unrest and social media. The social media elements are utilized very effectively, which isn’t often done well. Especially because it’s so relatable, and an eerily close parallel to modern society. The Joaquin Phoenix led cast was pretty solid, though nothing totally crazy. I enjoyed Phoenix as I always do, and I don’t care what character he plays, he’s always a joy to watch. The same goes for Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone. Though they didn’t have much screen time, their parts are important, and carry immense weight throughout the film. I also really loved the cinematography, which was simple, yet outstandingly beautiful. Any landscape shot was breathtaking. The action sequences were shot very well, and keep you on the edge of your seat. Lastly, the score and sound were the perfect finishing touches to an intriguing, thought provoking, and downright awesome film. Despite being 2.5 hours, I could very easily watch an additional 2.5 hours on top of it. I didn’t want it to end. I would recommend this to all western/crime fans, and I’m itching to go see it again. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
