• I don’t even know how to feel about this film after watching it. So many conflicting feelings. I’ll go ahead and let you know that I’m a HUGE fan of TCAP and Chris Hansen’s other shows. I’ve seen just about everything, and know so much of the TCAP predator lore and all the infamous moments. The reason I bring that up is because of the controversy that Hansen and TCAP has, and I fully understand both sides. I think as of this moment, I will continue to support Chris Hansen because I believe he genuinely does good, even if he is vain and selfish (or at least portrayed as that, I’ve never met the guy so I don’t know). But yeah, this documentary explores some of those controversies, as well as digging into the question of “why would a person try to meet a child”. I think the doc does a pretty good job of at least exploring those topics, though there is never an answer given, and you’re kind of left trying to figure it out for yourself. It uses tons of archival TCAP footage (shoutout Lorne “Oh Cawd” Armstrong) to tell its story, while also showing modern day “predator catching”. It’s well edited, and the interviews from former TCAP decoys, as well as Chris Hansen himself, are well placed to deliver emotional punches and build tension. I do think the doc kind of lacks in terms of actual substance, because while it rehashes past events to drive the story, it doesn’t really go anywhere or uncover anything unseen. But it’s quite a memorable film that left me feeling a bit hollow and uncertain. I enjoyed it, and my inner TCAP fanboy was geeking out, but you also have to remember that all decisions have consequences. I would recommend this to all true crime fans.
