Dude, how do you get past this? It’s easily one of the best non-horror horror films I’ve ever seen, and I feel so emotionally drained. I’m gonna get through the actual film review first, and save my quick little rant at the end. For starters, this is one of the best written films I’ve seen in awhile, and the way you get connected with the characters and their relationships is done in a way that works instantly. From the get-go, I immediately felt like I knew Jia-han and Birdy. I hit the ground running and the emotional rollercoaster only got quicker. The dialogue between everyone is very natural yet very poetic, and the story completely tears your heart out, but somewhat heals you by the end. Depending how you look at it. Such a horrifically beautiful telling of love (or beautifully horrific). The performances are so insanely fantastic, and they’ll stick with me for quite some time. The two main men can be so joyous and innocent, but when it gets deep, they are so serious and emotional and tense. I swear I could physically feel their vibes coming through the TV screen. Their chemistry was some of the best I’ve ever seen in any film. Everything was so authentic and realistic. The score was very melancholy and uses great pieces of classical music to help provide a romantic atmosphere, and to kind of combat the emotional “horror” feel. It both feeds the “horror” feel and helps give you comfort. Now here comes the fun rant. The big themes of this film are about homosexuality, suppression of feelings, traditional society, and more. So what I have to say is this: if you don’t support same-sex love, you can go take a flying leap. Love is the strongest emotion in the universe. Everyone experiences it. Everyone wants to have a part of love, everyone wants to be loved, everyone wants to be in love. It’s the strongest connector between people. Love is the literal foundation of humanity and peace. And you (homophobes) want to say that some people shouldn’t be allowed to partake in love? Just because it’s against tradition and “moral values”? You want them to bottle it up and suppress the most strongest and powerful emotion a person can feel? You are not deserving of love if you make it your business to prevent others from having it. Ok, rant over! Anyways, this film is absolutely perfect and does one of the best and most accurate representations of gay love, and the toll it can take on your wellbeing and others. I would recommend it to EVERYONE. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
