The Tingler
William Castle, you silly guy. I will say this, from the films of his that I’ve seen, not all of them are great, but he certainly knows how to bring something crazy and weird. The reason I wanted to watch this one is because a small clip of it is shown in ‘The Black Phone’, so I figured I should watch the whole thing at some point. It was mildly enjoyable, though definitely a bit tedious and goofy. Even though it’s less than 90 minutes, it still weirdly felt a little long. There’s just a couple scenes that felt a little out of place, though they really weren’t. It might just be because I watched this really late and I’m tired. But the story is definitely original, with a nice combo of sci-fi and horror. There were a few scenes that made me squirm a little bit, so the film did its job. I now firmly believe that I have a Tingler on my spine. But I don’t have a name for him yet. The performances were all pretty generic, and Vincent Price is always a treat to watch. The Tingler prop was pretty sweet, and though clearly fake, it was still cool. The red blood in the sink and bathtub against the monochrome visuals was awesome. There’s a lot of cool moments, it’s just that everything in between feels a little slow. Lastly, the intro by Castle and the ending message from Price was a nice little bookend for a fun but cheesy horror. I would recommend it to most fans of classic sci-fi/horror.
