The Fantastic Four
For a B-level Marvel film from the 90s that was technically made to never be released (or so Stan Lee says), this isn’t as horrible as I thought it would be. It’s still better than Fant4stic, mostly because it feels like a very silly and cheesy science fiction TV episode from some forgotten show. My biggest gripe is that even with a 90 minute runtime, the film takes way too long to introduce characters and do the whole origin story. The entire first half was just establishing powers, and then it finally gets to saving the day. It feels more like a pilot than an actual film. But the story is still kind of fun, if you like this kind of cheesy stuff. It’s very reminiscent of 70s and 80s Doctor Who. The acting isn’t good, but it wasn’t necessarily horrendous. The dialogue was crappy, but I still liked the characters well enough to care. I liked the suit designs (mostly Doom), and The Thing looked fantastic (say that again?). I also liked how the special effects were minimal, though when they were present, it was extremely obvious. But the silly effects are what help give this personality. Lastly, the score was pretty strong, though very repetitive. It was easily the highlight for me. Overall, it’s certainly not good, but there’s been worse. Not one I’d watch again, but I’m glad I did it once. I’d only recommend it if you like goofy sci-fi flicks, or you want to prepare for First Steps.
