Caught Stealing
Truly a delight! I had pretty decent expectations going into it, and they were all completely met. It’s a very fun crime/comedy, as it has plenty of moments that were genuinely funny, but still some moments that actually tore my heart out. Thus, it’s a delight. Not always a happy delight, but by the end, (most) everything works out. I love how simple the plot felt. It doesn’t feel like there’s a whole lot: there’s a stash of money, the wrong person gets mixed up in it, and gets chased by the bad guys. That’s about the crux of the film. There are a lot of moments that feel cliche, however….it’s just so fun, you get wrapped up in the characters and the whole thing feels so new. Not necessarily unique, but definitely new. There were great action/chase sequences, all spaced throughout the film strategically so there aren’t super big chunks that were slow or boring. The pacing was really great, and one of the best of the year in terms of keeping things moving forward. I’ll use a baseball analogy, which fits some of the baseball themes of the film: the plot and pacing felt like a lineup that has a really heavy hitter every other batter, rather than heavy hitters just at the top or bottom. The big scenes are perfectly spaced, with some scenes in between that are softer and more sentimental. The screenplay was wonderful. The cast was very well put together, especially with the different ethnic groups. Austin Butler leaves his A game, and truly shows why he’s such a great actor. Everyone else was good, but man, Austin is the guy. He’s so relatable and vulnerable, and you can’t help but want to reach into the screen and give him the biggest hug. Overall, this is a very strong and very fun film with a great cast, fun story, and retro soundtrack. I would recommend it to all crime/comedy fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
