Wicked: For Good
I HAVE BEEN CHANGED FOR GOOD. No, I’m not just quoting the lyrics. It’s crazy to think that last year, I was so against watching this and part one, because I love ‘The Wizard of Oz’ so much. I didn’t want it to get ruined, but I reluctantly watched part one, and very quickly became a fan. My love for Wicked has only grown, and after finishing this, I’m on a permanent Wicked high. I’m gonna read the book soon, because I’m curious how close of an adaptation these films are. But as someone who hasn’t read it or seen the play, I think this does a fantastic job of bringing the story to a close. I still prefer the first film, but this one is a very close second. You rarely see a sequel as heartfelt as this one. The character arcs are so strong and everyone comes full circle. Just remember, this is a retelling. I thought the writing was great, especially surrounding Elphaba and Glinda. The way those two characters complete each other…..beautiful. The performances are good all around, but extremely Oscar worthy for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Their chemistry is some of the best you’ll ever see in film, and their whimsical yet dark personas really emanate off the screen. The costume design is as good as the first film. The flowing gowns and vibrant suits and every single costume has some sort of unique aspect to it. Same for the production design, the whole environment is so fictional, but so believable. Oz is a real place, and you can’t tell me otherwise. And of course, the music. The score was so gorgeously written. So much emotion pours out of each note. The songs are very catchy and sentimental, and the two original songs were very easy on the ears and I want to listen to every song from this film forever. Overall, this is an amazing sequel, that to me, is a fitting end to a heartbreaking but hopeful story. Don’t listen to the haters, it isn’t worth missing. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
