Sorry, Baby
I can’t remember where I first heard about this, but it’s definitely been high up on my list of films from this year to watch. I remember seeing a lot of positive reviews on Twitter, though I can’t remember if this got a theatrical release in my area. Anyways, I finally watched it, and it’s powerful to say the least. I did make the mistake of watching it late at night, so I don’t think I appreciated it as much as I should’ve. I still liked it, but with a clearer mind, I can understand why people think this is a borderline masterpiece. Also considering that it’s Eva Victor’s directorial debut, and she wrote it, and she starred in it. Sometimes that can be a triple threat, but in this case, it completely works out. The story is very grounded and down to earth, and the whole thing is one of the most realistic pieces of writing I’ve ever seen. Even if you’ve never been in the situation that Agnes has been in, you still feel completely connected with her. It’s a very deep film, though it doesn’t always feel like it. Also, the comedy-drama combo is priceless. Despite the serious nature of the story, it’s still wickedly hilarious, and very awkward at times (but in the funniest way possible). While some scenes smack you in the face, others leave you cackling uncontrollably. Well, it depends on your humor. That’s how it was for me. Lastly, the acting was phenomenal, especially from Eva Victor and Naomi Ackie. Those two completely make this film. Lucas Hedges is also really good and I’m glad to see him in more things. The entire cast is fantastic, even the unlikable characters. Overall, this was one of the better films of the year, and I definitely want to rewatch it soon with a clearer mind. It really is good. I would recommend it to all drama/dark comedy fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
