I’ll make this quick because I really don’t have a whole lot to say. The only reason I watched this was because Tessa Thompson was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance, so I thought I’d check her out. Well, the film is flat and boring, and not very memorable. I’ll give credit where credit is due; Thompson was very good, and visually, it’s very strong. I really enjoyed the environment and atmosphere of the estate. The costumes are reminiscent of the time and really help build a nice aesthetic. Especially given the fact that the whole film takes place in the same place. There’s lots to look at and the visuals help the estate feel open and beautiful. And that’s about it. The story just never grabbed me and I couldn’t get into it at all. It wasn’t horribly written, I just think it could’ve been more compelling and a bit more interesting. Looking at the film as a whole, I think the boring outweighs the highlights. The score is good, the cinematography is nice, and Thompson is fantastic, but everything else is just very sludgy. So yeah, not one I’d watch again, nor would I recommend it.
