Nymph()maniac Vol. 1
Surprisingly, I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. I usually have pretty strong stances when it comes to….love making in film. I’m not against using humans in their natural form in the name of art. It’s natural and if done right, I think it’s beautiful. When it comes to intimacy, I think it’s a very private and personal thing between two people, and it shouldn’t be used. However, this film in particular goes against that belief. Seeing as the whole basis of the film is around Joe and her nymphomania, I think it helps drive the story and character development. It also has a strong narrative, which isn’t what I was expecting. The style it’s done in feels very professional, and though very graphic, it doesn’t feel like a cheap p*rno or anything. I found myself becoming pretty invested in Joe’s life and how she copes with herself and the people around her. Using fly fishing as a comparison to love making was not what I would’ve had in mind, but it totally works. The acting was pretty decent, with Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgård using their calming demeanors to tastefully keep this film moving forward. Stacy Martin does good, and Uma Thurman’s scene was the standout for me. Overall, this was a solid start, though it’s nothing mind blowing, and there are a couple of uncomfortable moments, but it’s pretty decent. I’m just hoping that Vol. 2 will continue strongly. I’ll be finding out in about five minutes. I’d recommend this to most drama fans, especially if you enjoy erotic art (obviously).
