Power Ballad
Paul Rudd. Nick Jonas. Musical comedy. SIGN ME UP! I think this was much better than I expected it to be, because let’s be honest, most comedies nowadays feel very throw away. But this one has a lot of heart in it, and it was genuinely hilarious. I was giggling for about half the film, and tapping my foot during the other half. It definitely sticks out from recent comedies because of the way it utilizes its genres. It takes the natural talents of Jonas and the comedic chops from Rudd, smushes them together, and makes an effective musical comedy. The story is pretty solid, though very simple. You don’t have to strain yourself paying attention or anything, but it goes just deep enough to deliver a heartfelt message of family and love. All the characters (at least the main ones) were written exceptionally well in my eyes. There’s some occasional toxic qualities, but as a whole, everyone (mostly) evens out at the end, and there’s a good character arc for Rudd’s character. The chemistry between Rudd and Jonas was very strong, and though they obviously had their drama, it was in a best frenemies kind of way. They worked well together and both performances felt natural and seamless. The soundtrack was quite awesome, and one of my favorites of the year so far. Rudd brings a retro charm to his wedding covers, and Jonas is…..well, he’s Nick Jonas, you can’t not fall in love with his voice. ALSO THEY USED “OUTSIDE” BY GEORGE MICHAEL. MY PERSONAL ANTHEM. It’s really hard not to like this film. It’s quite solid and surprisingly quirky, fun, and catchy. Not anything generational, but it’s up there with memorable comedies of this decade. I would recommend it to everyone. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
