War of the Worlds (2005)
Yep, this is undeniably a Spielberg film. You can very clearly see his imprint and style, as he’s able to make a decently terrifying alien movie that has great action scenes, fantastic sound design, and a strong cast. Comparing it to the original, it doesn’t hold as much of a candle. It’s still good, but definitely a downgrade. My biggest complaint out of the way first: despite starting strong with a first act that sucks you in, and a second act that builds tension and atmosphere, the third act definitely feels way too drawn out. Especially the basement scene, which felt like it lasted forever. It’s crucial because you get to know the Martians a little better, but it took me out of it a little bit. However, it does wrap up nicely. There’s just a couple scenes that could’ve been shortened to keep the pace going strong. I also wasn’t a super huge fan of some writing decisions, such as some things with the kids and the family dynamic. But again, this is exciting and has some great sequences that genuinely had me worried (mostly in the first half). The designs of the Martians weren't anything special, and seemed a little too…complicated for me, but the way their machines looked, and SOUNDED, my goodness. I won’t be able to get the machine sound out of my head. Very, very spooky and I’m totally here for it. The VFX, especially for 2005, were really well done, minus a couple tiny details. The acting was pretty good, though nothing that sticks out as being super memorable. Tom Cruise is awesome as always. Lastly, the score, by maestro John Williams, was phenomenal, providing very thrilling and very chilling music that perfectly fits the action and emotions. Well done! Overall, this film is pretty solid, although it definitely has its kinks that stuck out. It doesn’t live up to the original, but it’s still good, and I’d recommend it to most sci-fi fans.
