Messiah of Evil
I'd never heard of this until this morning, when I saw a little snippet of it on Facebook. So, impulse watch! It was pretty enjoyable, and has a very strong abstract look. It’s a combination of the 70s setting, with the bright colors that actually helps sell the very dark tone. The production design of the town makes you want to trust everyone and everything, with all the vibrant colors of the theater and stores. However, it’s a lot more evil, which you get to pretty quickly. It’s a perfect length film, where the first half slowly builds up the eerie vibe, and then the second half is figuring out what’s going on and trying not to die. The writing isn’t anything special, though the antagonists are fun. The dialogue feels very forced and the acting is pretty stale. None of the characters jump out as being memorable, and on that end, it feels like every other 70s horror film. But the creepy town and the creepy people make up for it. The electro score is very retro and helps give this a very strong Halloween-y, Twilight Zone feel. Lastly, the makeup is done pretty well. It’s just enough to be spooky, but not overly done and goofy. Overall, this is a silly film but it’s pretty entertaining. I would recommend it to all classic horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
