Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
I’ll go ahead and say it: this is easily the best Star Wars film outside of the original trilogy. It’s really not even close. As much as I love ‘Revenge of the Sith’, I love this a bit more, and the way it brings back so much nostalgia (not just the theater experience, but the closeness to the originals) really helps propel it. Maybe you don’t agree, but all I’m saying is that Gareth Edwards absolutely rocks by giving us this space poetry. Some people complain about the writing (which I could understand), but you know what? I ain’t gonna listen to the haters, and I’m gonna say that this is immaculately put together. You can’t change my mind. The story is so tragic, but it’s so full of heart and you can’t help but want to run through a brick wall. Especially after watching ‘Andor’, you appreciate everything (Cassian, the rebellion, the connection to the overall lore) SO much more. Implementing each character and bouncing around the different planets absolutely works for me, as you get a somewhat quick and well put together glimpse of the chain reaction of the Death Star (literally and metaphorically). Each character has their own special trait and hear me out, let’s get a Chirrut and Baze spinoff. The performances are all really great, and I think this is definitely one of the best acted Star Wars films (especially compared to the prequels). The visual effects are absolutely stellar and so detailed, and not as jarring as some other Star Wars films. There’s never been bad visual effects in Star Wars, it’s just that sometimes it’s very evident. Not in this case, where everything looks so smooth. Well, other than Tarkin and Leia. A bit uncanny, but just try to ignore it. Giacchino’s score uses a lot of the classic John Williams sound, style, and themes, while still putting his own spin on it. My final thoughts are that this is a sci-fi masterpiece with moments that really elevate you (and gut you, too), a Darth Vader scene that may be the best in the entire franchise, and just a good ol’ story of rebellion and fighting for what you believe. I would recommend it to all Star Wars fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
