Punch-Drunk Love
When it comes to dramedies, this film may be the best example I’ve seen of mixing those two genres perfectly. That’s a pretty big honor because I’ve seen quite a lot. I think the nice thing is that it doesn't necessarily go back and forth between comedy and drama. There’s definitely some scenes that are funnier than others, and some that are more serious than others. But to me, each scene is so consistently balanced. Just enough to where you can laugh or chuckle, but also, you stay so invested and feel an emotional connection, in a deep way. At least that’s how I felt. Despite being just over 90 minutes, there’s still a lot to see and unpack, as simple as it may seem. I love how it’s almost surreal while still being very grounded. Most of what happens could happen to an everyday, ordinary man, yet there’s moments that almost feel like you’ve been temporarily removed from the atmosphere. Does that make sense? The writing really lifts up each character, whether it’s in a positive or negative light. The cinematography is keen and on point, with a nice use of visual interludes and keeping the focus on Barry. The soundtrack and score was one of my favorites yet in a PTA film. It has such a smooth, easy sound that creates a beautiful, loving atmosphere that sells the romance. Lastly, the performance from Adam Sandler is Oscar worthy to me, and it’s a shame he didn’t get nominated. Absolutely snubbed. He’s so quirky and innocent and vulnerable, and you can’t help but want to pour your heart out to him. He’s one of most relatable characters I’ve ever seen in a film. Overall, this film is probably one of the best of the 21st century, and one of my top favorites from PTA. It’s got humor and heart, while still making you uneasy and confused. It’s gorgeous. I would recommend it to all comedy/drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
