God’s Own Country
Gay cinema is the best cinema. I’ll die on that hill. So many of these kinds of films hold so much more power than just your standard straight romance. I can’t explain why. There’s just such a strong essence of passion and love. Especially in this one, where Josh O’Connor and Alec Secareanu steal the show and have some of the best chemistry and best tension I’ve seen in awhile. I love how simple the story is, and despite the simplicity, it’s still emotionally complex and shows a great look at intimacy and commitment. Between this, ‘Brokeback Mountain’, and Lord of the Rings, there’s nothing quite like gay guys on a mountain trying to figure themselves out. I’m joking about LOTR. Or am I? But either way, the journey of finding identity and deep love is one that everyone can connect to. The performances from O’Connor and Secareanu are generational, both when they’re together or by themselves. The amount of communication through body language and the eyes was outstanding. The vibes that the two guys constantly give off, you can always tell their mood, whether it’s positive or negative. The chemistry was off the charts. Lastly, the cinematography, scenery, and visuals were all very reflective of the story, emotions, and themes. While the color was a bit drabby, it fits the mood perfectly. It displays farm life from a realistic perspective. Sometimes films are a bit unrealistic with their visuals, and they emphasize color and scenery to make the film elevated. However, this one is one of the most down to earth, grounded, realistically shot films for this genre. I may not be making any sense with that, so just see this for yourself to really experience the grittiness and passion. I would recommend this to all drama/romance fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
