Summer of 85
Not every story has a happy ending. I may have just spoiled this a little bit, but it’s fine. It’s one of several LGBT love stories that leaves you depressed and maybe emotionally destroyed, depending on how invested you get. The first two acts of the film are absolutely phenomenal, with good character building and non-linear storytelling that slowly adds up to one big event. However, the third act kind of falls apart. Not hugely, but it was enough to take me out of it just a little bit. It could’ve capped off in a much better way. It wasn’t necessarily a bad ending, I liked the way it ended. It just should’ve taken a different way to get there. But overall, the story was very moving. The performance from Félix Lefebvre was awesome and really tugged at your heart. Benjamin Voisin was also great, but didn’t stand out as much as Lefebvre. The color scheme was the most noticeable positive point of the whole film. There’s such a dramatic shift in color whenever the tone shifts, which helps the emotion resonate in your heart. When Alex and David are together, there’s bright, vibrant colors, which emphasize the love and warmth of summer. Then when it jumps to the present, color seems absent and bland. It’s a very easy technique that is used a lot, but it’s done very effectively in this case. Lastly, the soundtrack and score were well done, especially with the club scene. It had no reason going that hard. Overall, this film has flaws, but is still amazing, and I totally loved it. It made me both happy and sad, angry and jealous, and every other emotion. It’s one for the ages. I would recommend it to all drama/romance fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
