A Big Bold Beautiful Journey
I’ll start off by saying this: screw the haters. I’ve seen my fair share of complaints about this film, as well as the unfavorable critic score from Rotten Tomatoes. Do I understand why people don’t like it? Yes, I can see why. But I still liked this, and it’s very underrated. I will agree that there were parts of the writing that feel a little unnatural, and kind of crammed together. Like they were pieced together slightly out of order, because there were some weird jumps in between scenes. The order of events just felt odd. However, I think if this film was an even two hours, it could’ve sorted itself out. It just needed a few moments to flesh everything out. It also doesn’t feel like anything super duper original. It’s two people who meet and explore their past (and relationship) with each other. Nothing crazy. However, it was very whimsical at times, and the visuals help elevate this film to a different dimension. I love how much of an oddball it is. It’s colorful and vibrant, yet thematically bleak, at least until the characters learn more about themselves. The performances from Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie were solid, but not amazing. They just kind of play themselves. There aren’t really certain character traits or personalities that stand out, but I still really loved both of them. Colin especially, his accent is perfect. He might have my favorite voice of all time. Lastly, the soundtrack was very gorgeous, with several selections from Laufey that compliment the plot well. A touch of jazz and a mellow sound is what this film needed. Overall, this film has some minor issues in the writing department, but the main plot is meaningful. I would recommend it to most drama/romance fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
