Eternals
This film does not get enough credit. It’s definitely one of the weaker entries of the MCU, but it’s hated on way too much. I was guilty of that back when I first watched it. For some reason (I don’t really remember), I absolutely hated it and thought it was one of the worst films I’d ever seen in my life. I don’t know why, maybe I just got really bored by it. But this time around, I had a much better time with it. I enjoyed it much more the second time, and there’s a lot of positive things about it. The story is pretty good, with high stakes and a mystical kind of vibe around it. The Eternals differ from other MCU heroes (in terms of creation and lore), so this film is a breath of fresh air. Also, at this point in the MCU (Phase 4, 2021), it’s nice to get new character introductions instead of reusing already existing characters. I’m a fan of the Eternals. It would’ve been better to give them a series because of how many of them there are, so you can have more time with each one. The character development in this is minimal, and I would’ve liked to see so much more. But what we got is still decent. It’s just a little tricky to get attached to a specific character because of how little you know about them. The same goes for the story, it’s very condensed and smushed together. Even with the film being close to three hours, it still needs a little bit more to fully flesh everything out. However, it’s still enjoyable and you can definitely have fun with it if you choose to. The performances are all good but nothing exceptional, and I really hope we see more of the Eternals in the future (probably not, but we’ll see). Especially Druig and Phastos, those guys are my BOYS. Also, give me more Harry Styles, please. The VFX were pretty good, and not too noticeable, except for a couple key moments. The costume and creature design was also good. Very fantastical, but *just* grounded enough to fit in with the rest of the MCU. Lastly, the score wasn’t super memorable, but it added enough to the important scenes to make the story move forward and add some depth. Overall, this film is underrated and slept on, but it’s not anything out of the ordinary. I would recommend it to most MCU fans, though it’s not one you necessarily need to be caught up on.
