I absolutely DESPISED this film the first time I watched it, and thought it was one of the worst ones I’d seen in my whole life. A few years later, I figure I treated it too harshly, so I decided a rewatch was in order. I have a much more favorable mindset about it, even though it still kind of sucks. It’s nowhere near as bad as I remember it being. It’s one of the horror flicks that focuses on kills and gore (which I almost always enjoy), but there doesn’t seem to be too much substance to it. It’s literally about a bunch of masked people killing a family, and that’s it. It doesn’t go deep in messaging, other than just trying to be a shocking, fun action horror. That being said, all the kills are great, and there’s a couple little twists that get you, there’s just not much to chew one. Both times I watched this, I was rooting for every single character (other than Erin) to be horribly massacred in the worst way possible. Everyone is so unbearable (which is the point), but I just can’t deal with them. The performances are also very over the top and stale, other than Sharni Vinson, who honestly reaches legendary final girl status. She’s not often talked about in final girl conversations, but she should be. She’s really the only driver keeping the film moving forward. As a whole, everything about this film is very mediocre, and it doesn’t go above that level. The good moments are the kills, everything in between is boring and bland. I can fully understand why some people adore this film, I’m just not one of them. I would only recommend it if you like very average slasher action horror flicks.
