Godzilla Minus Zero
The Empire Strikes Back. The Godfather Part II. Blade Runner 2019. LOTR: The Two Towers. I have just named a few perfect sequels, and ladies and gentlemen, let’s throw one more into the mix. ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ absolutely blew me away, and it had no right to do so. If the first film gave us any inclination on how this one would turn out, we knew it would also be a 10/10. To some, it’s just another Godzilla film with too little Godzilla and too much human. But it’s so much deeper than that. Takashi Yamazaki carries his anti-war and accountability themes with this film, and creates a beautiful (and harrowing) spectacle that only he and Toho could do. I was slightly disappointed when it was shown in the trailers that there would be another kaiju (you know which), because I REALLY enjoyed having a Godzilla solo film. But literally the opening scene immediately changed my mind, and you witness one of the most memorable monster fights in cinema history. I also love how this film is so close to King of the Monsters (2019), yet completely outshines it in every aspect. The performances are all amazing, and a bit exaggerated in the typical Godzilla manner. I care deeply for each character, and the balance between drama and monster is perfect. The writing is just wonderful, and neither the characters nor Godzilla take the spotlight over the other. The VFX are Oscar worthy once again, and I hope to see this pop up in the Academy's selection once awards season rolls around. Takashi is such a wizard. The score is powerful and vibrant, using previous Godzilla themes to truly honor the character. The sound design is IMPECCABLE, as there’s a gorgeous balance of music, roars, and dialogue, among many other elements. It’s definitely one of the loudest and most well mixed films I’ve seen in a theater. Lately, the visuals were very crisp and detailed, and the creature designs were absolutely flawless in every sense. Oh yeah, and that final scene had me BAWLING, and it’s the hardest I’ve cried in a theater since who knows when. Overall, this is a phenomenally perfect sequel, and I can’t wait to watch it again and again. I still prefer the first one over this, but if we’re being honest, they’re on the same exact level. I would recommend it to everyone, just make sure to obviously have seen the first one. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
