Clayface
Well, I can easily say that this is the best Clayface film ever made. Hahaha, that’s because it’s the only Clayface film! See what I did there? Ok, I’m sorry. Let me start by saying that my literal wet dream is getting an R-rated DC body horror film, and that’s exactly what this is. Literally my two favorite genres of film are horror and superhero…squish them together and you have ‘Clayface’. It turned out almost exactly like I thought it would, and I am HERE for it. It’s quite gruesome and hard to look at (which is a compliment), and I got really attached to my little cutie pie Matt Hagen. Let me go ahead and get my weaker comments out of the way. The biggest weak point is probably the dialogue and writing. The main plot itself is great, but the first half of the film can be a little bit of a drag. It starts off a little cluttered, then gets drawn out, and it feels very dumbed down at times. The main antagonist was also not super great, as he’s just another Gotham crime boss (not like we haven’t seen a million of them in years past). The revenge plot was generic (though it totally worked), and the “romance” between Matt and Caitlyn felt a bit forced. It makes sense for the third act, but I wasn’t too keen on it. It’s also very hard to care about any character other than Matt, mostly because they’re all extremely one dimensional and have no personality. But I was still completely locked in from start to finish, and the body horror was top notch. I don’t often get uncomfortable when watching horror films, but this one had me almost squeamish. The practical effects are insanely good, and very reminiscent of ‘The Substance’. It absolutely tickled my brain in the best way possible. The performances were mediocre at best, other than Tom Rhys Harries, who CARRIES. He was truly phenomenal in this (as well as insanely attractive), and I couldn't have asked for a better casting. Throw him his roses and shower him with champagne. The VFX were decent, though very noticeable and cheesy. There’s some cool tricks pulled, especially towards the end, but still the silly (but fun) kind of B-horror effects you get in modern horror. Overall, I quite enjoyed this, even if it does have its obvious flaws. It’s fun, it’s gross, it’s epic, and I love it. Give me more Clayface, ASAP. I would recommend this to all horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
