Suspiria (2018)
Well, I’ve finally seen both Suspiria’s, and this one is definitely a step down from the original. Not a huge step, but a big enough step to be noticeable. I’ll say this: I’ll always love Luca Guadagnino, and I do think he did a good job with this film, it’s just not quite the same as the first. In many ways, he took some key elements of the original, and essentially flipped them. One example is the visuals. While this film is still striking, it’s extremely drabby and lacks color. It feels very bleak and depressing, which….it is, so it makes sense. But it sets a very harrowing tone that carries out until the very end. It still looks quite sharp though, it’s just devoid of any kind of life. Which again, is kind of the point. The story is similar to the original screenplay, though it strays off as it goes on, and delivers its own ending with its own themes. I wish more remakes did that. Rather than just repeating past events, it takes creative liberties to be its own films, while also still staying (mostly) true to the original source material. But yeah, the story is good and entertaining, though very stretched out, and you definitely feel the 150 minute runtime. The whole cast does a good job, and I surprisingly enjoyed Dakota Johnson as the lead. No hate against her, I’m just not a huge fan of her as an actress. But she does deliver in this, though she’s a bit outshined by the supporting roles. Mia Goth was great, and she’s easily one of my favorite actresses, and she’s so beautiful and pure and I love her. Also, Tilda Swinton in three different roles? Hello? She is so freaking good in everything she does, and the fact she pulls off not one, not two, but three separate roles, and you genuinely have zero idea it’s her….well done! She is my queen. The score is pretty good, the production design feels very authentic, and the choreography was exceptional. Very out there, but very good. Overall, this is a good remake, and though Luca’s vision meets my expectations (as always), it just doesn’t hold a candle to the original. I would probably recommend this to most horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
